What Is the 3D Modelling & Game Art Diploma?

The 3D Modelling & Game Art Diploma is a 12-month full-time game art course in Singapore for people who want to build game-ready 3D assets professionally — the characters, environments and props that ship inside a real engine.

Most 3D modelling courses stop at the render. This one doesn’t. Every asset you make travels the same route it would take in a studio: blocked out, sculpted in ZBrush, retopologised, unwrapped, textured in Substance Painter, optimised, then lit and assembled in Unreal Engine. You learn to work inside the constraints that matter — polygon budgets, baking, scale, style consistency against a brief — because your work has to survive them.

You don’t need an art qualification or any prior 3D experience to start. Term 1 opens with observational drawing and perspective. By Term 3 you’re delivering to a brief in a studio-simulated production environment, with your work critiqued the way an art director would critique it.

You finish with an industry-recognised diploma and, more to the point, a real-time portfolio you can put in front of a studio.

What You’ll Learn

  • 3D modelling fundamentals, visual design principles, and digital sculpting
  • Character design, high-poly sculpting, and stylization
  • UV mapping, texture painting, and material workflows (Substance Painter)
  • Environment design, modular asset creation, and prop design
  • Photogrammetry capture and 3D printing workflows
  • Real-time lighting, FX, and cinematic camera work in Unreal Engine
  • Asset optimization and integration for game-ready pipelines

Students train on industry-standard software including 3Ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marmoset, and Unreal Engine – the same tools used in professional game studios.

Who This Diploma Is For (and Who It Isn’t)

This is the right programme if you…

  • Want to work as a 3D artist, character artist, environment artist or prop artist in games, film or collectibles
  • Can commit to 12 months of full-time, on-campus study in Singapore
  • Want a portfolio judged by working art directors, not a certificate of completion
  • Are starting from zero or near-zero – Term 1 begins with observational drawing and perspective
  • Are 16 or older, and either meet the academic requirements or can pass a portfolio interview

This isn’t the right fit if you…

  • Need to study online or part-time – this programme is classroom-based and full-time only
  • Want to learn a single tool. If you only need ZBrush or Blender, our [short courses] are a better and far cheaper starting point
  • Are looking for a free or low-cost introduction – this is a S$19,062+ professional qualification
  • Are primarily interested in game programming or design rather than art – see our [Game Design & Technology Diploma]

Want to Go Further than a Diploma?

This diploma is a complete qualification on its own – but it’s also a route to a UK degree. Graduates can progress to a BA Computer Arts degree in 12 more months through Stage 3 Direct Entry at Abertay University, stepping straight into the third year rather than starting again.

That means a diploma and a UK bachelor’s degree in two years, for close to what a single year costs elsewhere. If your goal is a studio job, the diploma portfolio may be all you need. If you want the degree as well, the path is already built.

Applying from Outside Singapore?

International students make up a large part of every cohort, and we handle the process end to end. We provide Student Pass application support for international students, covering document preparation, ICA submission, arrival guidance and course payment.

Apply at least eight weeks before the intake date. Student Pass processing takes time, and for the 15 February 2027 intake that means starting your application well before the new year.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Modern game art pipelines demand assets that are optimized, engine-ready, and built for real-time environments. This diploma equips students with the skills to create high-quality characters, props, and environments using industry-standard workflows, including digital sculpting, 3D modelling, texturing, and photogrammetry.

Students gain hands-on experience integrating their assets into Unreal Engine, preparing a real-time portfolio that reflects professional production standards. The curriculum also includes exposure to 3D printing workflows and real-time animation import, allowing students to present their creations with movement and in-engine visual fidelity. Delivered in a studio-simulated environment, this 12-month program develops both creative capability and technical fluency.

Graduates will be equipped to enter the industry with a portfolio that not only showcases their artistry, but proves their readiness for real-time game development pipelines.

FAQs

Can I apply without O-Level / Grade 10 Art Subject or without O-Levels at all?

O-Level Art Subject is not compulsory, but applicants must meet the academic entry requirements for the Diploma.

If you have O-Levels but did not take Art Subject, you may still apply. Your suitability can be assessed through Art Test and interview.

If you do not have O-Levels or an equivalent qualification, you will first need to complete MAGES’ Foundation Certificate in Creative Technologies before progressing to the Diploma.

You do not need to already be an accomplished artist. The Diploma begins by developing core fundamentals such as observational drawing, perspective and digital art before moving into more advanced 3D modelling and game art skills.

What is the Art Test, and how do I prepare?

The Art Test is not about showing us amazing art skills. We are looking for an amazing mindset.

We do not expect you to already be a professional artist before joining MAGES. The purpose of the test is to understand your current foundation, creative potential, resilience, ability to follow a brief and, most importantly, your willingness to learn and improve.

Do not worry about producing perfect artwork. We would rather see honest work, your thought process and your potential.

You don’t need amazing skills to start. You need the right mindset, curiosity and willingness to improve. That’s what we’re looking for. Speak to one of our Course Advisors, and we will brief you on the Art Test requirements and guide you through the process accordingly. Please make an appointment

Do I need to be able to draw?

You do not need to be an amazing artist before joining MAGES.

Some basic drawing ability will help, but what matters more is your mindset, creative potential and willingness to learn and improve. The programme is designed to build your fundamentals progressively before moving into more advanced 3D modelling and game art skills.

If you are unsure whether your current level is suitable, speak to one of our Course Advisors and we will guide you accordingly.

Is this diploma recognised?

MAGES Institute of Excellence is registered with the Committee for Private Education as a Private Education Institution and holds EduTrust certification.

MAGES was also ranked among the Top 50 Creative Media and Entertainment Schools and Colleges in the World by The Rookies in 2025.

Can I continue to a degree after this diploma?

Yes.

After completing the 12-month Diploma in 3D Modelling & Game Art, you can progress to the 9-month Advanced Diploma in Interactive Media & Production, followed by the 12-month BA Computer Arts degree with Abertay University, subject to meeting the progression requirements.

The full pathway is:

12-month Diploma
9-month Advanced Diploma
12-month Degree

Total duration: approximately 33 months.

This gives you a clear progression route from Diploma to Advanced Diploma and then to a UK Bachelor’s degree.

What jobs can I get, and what do they pay?

Graduates can pursue roles across the games, animation, media and digital content industries, including 3D Artist, Game Artist, Character Artist, Environment Artist, Prop Artist, Texture Artist and Junior 3D Modeller.

For entry-level roles in Singapore, graduates can generally expect a starting salary range of around S$2,200 to S$3,500 per month, depending on the role, company, portfolio quality, technical skills and experience.

Your portfolio plays an important role in this industry, which is why the programme focuses on helping you develop industry-relevant projects and a strong body of work to showcase to potential employers.

Do you help with job placement?

Yes. MAGES provides career and portfolio support to help students prepare for opportunities in the creative and games industries.

While employment cannot be guaranteed, students receive support through portfolio development, feedback and mentorship from industry professionals, career guidance and opportunities to connect with the industry.

Our focus is on helping students graduate with more than a qualification. We want them to leave with a strong portfolio, practical production experience and a clearer understanding of what studios look for when hiring junior artists.

MAGES graduates have gone on to work across the games, animation and creative industries, including at Bandai Namco, Century Games, Ubisoft, Passion Republic, and more..

Can international students apply, and how does the Student Pass work?

Yes. International students are welcome to apply for the full-time Diploma in 3D Modelling & Game Art.

Once you have successfully completed the admissions process and accepted your place, MAGES will guide you through the Student’s Pass application process and provide the necessary school documentation for your application to Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Student’s Pass applications are subject to ICA approval, and admission to MAGES does not automatically guarantee approval of a Student’s Pass.

International students are strongly encouraged to apply early to allow sufficient time for admission assessment, document preparation, Student’s Pass processing and arrangements for travelling to Singapore.

What skills and experience do I need to become a 3D game artist or 3D modeler?

To become a 3D Game Artist or 3D Modeler, you need:

  • Basic drawing and design skills – to understand shapes and forms
  • Knowledge of 3D software – like Blender, Maya, or ZBrush
  • Understanding of game engines – such as Unity or Unreal Engine
  • Good sense of detail and creativity
  • A strong portfolio – showing your best work and personal projects
  • You don’t need to be perfect to start-just passion, practice, and willingness to learn!

Is there a part-time or online option?

No. The Diploma in 3D Modelling & Game Art is a full-time, classroom-based programme, and students cannot switch between full-time, part-time or online modes after commencement.

For learners who are unable to commit to a full-time Diploma, MAGES also offers shorter courses and workshops in areas such as Digital sculpting, Indie game development, Unreal Engine and other creative technologies.

Our Course Advisors can recommend an alternative programme based on your goals and availability.

When do applications close for the 15 February 2027 intake?

There is no fixed application cut-off date. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, and we keep each class small with only 15 students per intake.

Our intakes usually fill up in advance, with the February intake typically reaching capacity by December and the September intake by July.

We therefore strongly recommend applying early to secure your place rather than waiting closer to the intake date.

For international students, applying early is especially important to allow sufficient time for the Student’s Pass application and preparations for studying in Singapore.
